Decadent Life. Food in the past 24 hours. I know it isn't wise to eat out as often as I do, but I'm on break and food is yummy.

143 SURVIVAL

The California Girl's Guide to Surviving Her FIRST Cold Winter Week.

To the mass dismay of probably you, I do not do well in cold whether. I'm the kind of girl who actually prefers humidity, squatting in my own sweat, dripping in nature's air conditioning and reading blogs. The purpose of my life thus far has been to avoid any kind of cold front first because I am completely un-prepared for this kind of disaster and secondly because I don't like cold hands. Unfortunately, last week, throughout the last week of my first semester of teaching, Mother Nature decided to act with cruelty and strike my life with a vengeance!!! One week of below freezing temperature (CRUEL FATE). On the bright side, throughout this week I developed a system to combat and ultimately conquer the cold. Using quick thinking like MacGuyver and a slightly disposable income (given my lack of children), I was able to survive and thus pass my knowledge to you.
1. A Parka. For as way back as when, I have been a huge advocate for the parka. One hundred percent utilitarian (a must) and a fashion statement, the parka is necessary. For weeks before, I was rotating a pleather jacket (plastic+leather), a swaket (sweater+jacket) and a trenchcoat. Other teachers often scoffed, saying that as a Cali-girl I needed to get more prepared. Thankfully, Brandon came through with an early Christmas present (that I pre-picked). He gave it to me early and I have worn it EVERYDAY FOR TWO WEEKS!!

2. House slippers. At one point, I would have rejected these silly shoes, saying that they are a too bougouis tu xie (slippers). NOW, I can't stop wearing them. Lined in faux fur, they are the perfect accessory for the divanista or divanista in training. Also they are warm. Did I mention that?

3. Swiss Miss. Need I say more? Increase you decadentness by using whole milk. Topped with whipped cream. Add a personal favorite, unpictured in its shame, of sprinkles for a festive cheer.

4. Tealight candles. THE POWER FUSE BOX BLEW OUT DOWN THE STREET AND THE INTERNET STOPPED WORKING AND THERE WERE LIKE FIREWORK DOWN THE STREET FROM THE CRAZINESS. I had NOTHING. NOTHING. I went across the landing and my neighbor gave me tea lights. In cold weather you must be prepared because, mathematically,
cold weather = lights going out
ALL lights out = No internet
No internet = DISASTER
DISASTER = COLD.
Trust me. Be prepared.

5. Ceramic heater. I drove to Home Depot (HAZARDOUS DRIVING!!!) and walked in with a purpose. I asked where the heaters were and they said they didn't have anymore. I should check returns. I ran there and the lady told me that there were two left. Two weeks ago they had over 2,000 and in one week there were TWO IN RETURNS. I bought the ceramic one, and the glowing red heat is fire to the primitive being in me, and now I am toasty. Also, my new plant was dying so I put in out of the direct line of the heater and now it is thriving. So not only does this heater warm me, it saves lives.

141 Fierce Love

"If I may be permitted to say so, the most fortunate experience of these past twenty years has been the selfless love I have received from my wife, Liu Xia. She could not be present as an observer in court today, but I still want to say to you, my dear, that I firmly believe your love for me will remain the same as it has always been. Throughout all these years that I have lived without freedom, our love was full of bitterness imposed by outside circumstances, but as I savor its aftertaste, it remains boundless. I am serving my sentence in a tangible prison, while you wait in the intangible prison of the heart. Your love is the sunlight that leaps over high walls and penetrates the iron bars of my prison window, stroking every inch of my skin, warming every cell of my body, allowing me to always keep peace, openness, and brightness in my heart, and filling every minute of my time in prison with meaning. My love for you, on the other hand, is so full of remorse and regret that it at times makes me stagger under its weight. I am an insensate stone in the wilderness, whipped by fierce wind and torrential rain, so cold that no one dares touch me. But my love is solid and sharp, capable of piercing through any obstacle. Even if I were crushed into powder, I would still use my ashes to embrace you."

Wow.

140 Blessed Fierceness

Look! I made it.

139 Daily Fun-ness.

SNOW IN ATLANTA. BEYONCE AT COSTCO. FUN DAY.

Grace Young: Okay okay I am going to work now.
Brandon Kwong: You mean update your blog.

Wool Sweater knit by Gma, Raw Married to the Mob jeans (size 28 fits about a 6 if you are interested in buying as they are slightly too big but excellent), H&m Parka via Brandonski for Christmas, and my solid F21 platform booties that I love to death.

138 Nightly Fierceness

Last night Ken, Brandon and I went to Gold Room via guestlisting from his Yelp Boss.

First we went to the Organization of Chinese Association's Holiday Party at Grand China Restaurant. The food was so delicious. Ate two heaping plates packed with SzeChuan cold noodles, garlicky eggplant, Chinese curry, beef ribs, shrimp toast (a definite must even though I hate shrimp), bok choy, guo tie, and moreee!!!! So yummbolicious. After that we needed to kill time before Gold Room so we went to Oxford Comics and looked at hentei and I read a whole graphic novel and off we went!

Gold Room was so so so mega swanktastic. It was definitely fun (free is fun) and fancy pants. It was circus themed so there were all these fancy (underdress but fabulous) circus people eating fire, hanging off sheets, living doll, raving clown, partner yogaing, amazing stuff. It's official-- I want to join the CIRCUSSSSSSSSS.

Backless chain dress from Wet Seal (it was like six dollars okay), cheapy one peep toe tights, blue heels (I added a fancy flash picture so you can see how blue they are okay Doronugget). I wore my pleather motorcycle jacket the whole time (almost) because there are old people there and they don't need to flash the flesh like at Primal.

TFA Holiday Party. Ate an amazing pita first. I will go back and take pictures. Then went to TFA. Ate bread pudding made of krispy kremes. Drank 3 vodkasprites and came home after they played Bottoms Up once. Ugh I am not sociable.

Free J.Crew tank top from Dorosister, Sequins skirt from Buffalo Exchange, 2 pairs of black tights, and Electric Blue Aldo pumps from Platos Closet. Apparently I am incredibly cheap as well.

135 Little Joys

1. Note from a student who used to be a pain and now is on task. Too bad for her sixty something on the test yesterday. Boo.
2. CRACK COOKIES!! Twenty five dollars a box for premade premeasured cookie dough. SO YUMMY. I left them in my classroom in the closet for almost two days and they are still perfect.
3. Finally figured out how and where to put up my pictures. Very happy.
4. Aloe Vera and an air plant. They are doing very well. Surprisingly. I am pleased.
5. Baked pasta: 2 kinds of pasta (poor woman), green beans, onions, pan fried pork belly, GARLIC, cream of chicken, and left over brie. A meal made of leftovers. SO YAY!

134 Daily Picture

Woke up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy. Freaked out over the potential loss of new phone only to discover that it was on the couch. Ate tuna casserole (not pictured) that Kevin Kwong made. Went to Ace with Ken Tran. Saw raccoon kitty. Ken bought me cool stuff. Went back to the TranKwong residence and ate a hot pocket (not pictured). Went to DREAM Act vigil at the Center for Pan-Asian Community Services (aka my new dream home). Went to eat at Little SzeChuan. Came home and worked. Now updating on life.
